I profeti sono le figure più affascinanti e originali dell'esperienza religiosa dell'Israele antico. Ogni profeta ha una propria personalità e, soprattutto, una propria personale teologia. I teologi che hanno concepito il progetto delle sculture della cattedrale modenese hanno individuato 12 di tali profeti e li hanno collocati sugli stipiti del portale centrale, a segnalare che essi hanno annunciato la piena realizzazione della salvezza nella figura del Cristo. Tra questi, spicca la figura di Mosè, profeta e legislatore, mentre altri due personaggi (Elia ed Enoch) sono raffigurati a fianco della lapide che celebra la fondazione del Duomo. Di ogni profeta raffigurato, il testo presenta i tratti fondamentali, in modo da fornire una breve ed essenziale introduzione alla lettura dei loro libri nella Bibbia.
