Questo libro è una rivisitazione critica dell'opera dell'analista sociale radicale americano Thorstein B. Veblen. La novità è da vedersi nel tentativo di comprendere Veblen nel suo contesto storico-culturale allo scopo di misurarne tutta la potenza predittiva circa l'evoluzione del capitalismo da "produttivo" a "finanziario", valutare il misterioso legame fra marginalità e creatività e quindi il fallimento, dal punto di vista della carriera, di Veblen, mai giunto alla posizione di professore ordinario in quanto non ottenne mai la tenure né a Chicago né a Stanford e neppure alla Washington University di Saint Louis nel Missouri. Ma l'aspetto più originale di questo contributo riguarda l'incredibile incomprensione degli stessi marxisti e radicali americani, da Paul Baran a P. Sweezy, che vedono in lui solo uno spenceriano in ritardo, a C. Wright Mills, che finisce per farne un tecnocrate, e a David Riesman, che ne riduce, con una interessante interpretazione psicoanalitica, tutta la critica sociale a un oscuro risentimento contro il padre.
