Il burlesque (propriamente burlesco) e un genere di spettacolo satirico che nacque in Inghilterra nel XXVIII secolo e acquisi durante l'Ottocento caratteristiche piu comiche e parodistiche. Importato negli Stati Uniti dove venne molto apprezzato, lo spettacolo, a causa delle molteplici trasformazioni, era composto alla fine del XIX secolo da caricature, canzoni e danze di ballerine (col tempo sempre piu svestite) che eseguivano anche spogliarelli. Quindi, col passare del tempo il burlesque ha perso il suo elemento caricaturale divenendo sempre piu simile al varietà.
